Disable autocomplete in OpenOffice

Every time I install OpenOffice the silly AutoComplete (a.k.a. auto complete or word completion) “feature” really annoys me and it usually takes me too long to figure out where to disable it. I always look for it in “Configure” or “Options” but of course it’s not there. To disable auto completion in OpenOffice, do the following ::

  • Tools -> AutoCorrect/AutoFormat…
  • Word Completion tab
  • Uncheck “Enable word completion”

Ta-da.

Update: This post has generated lots of comments. Here’s where to disable this behavior in OpenOffice Calc:

  • Tools -> Cell Contents -> AutoInput

A friend found this for me via Google when I was bitching on our chatroom about the Autocomplete. Talk about an incredibly distracting 'feature' and it is buried in the gazillion menus of settings. Thanks for posting this and letting google snarf it up. -Kit

Yeah, thanks a lot - I found this small yet informative page from Google (snarf??) and it worked. Thx again...

This site is the #1 link on google for the search "open office autocomplete" (without the quotes in the search).

I wonder why.

Oh, and thanks.

Posted by: Peter at May 3, 2005 7:34 PM

Oh, my, lord. That function is the absolute worst ever in the history of horrible functions. I nearly deleted open office.

This is also the 'Feeling Lucky' google for "open office autocomplete disable". Y'all are my heros for the day.

Another person from Google query "open office disable auto-completion" saying loud "Thanks!" =)

Posted by: karmi at July 27, 2005 10:11 AM

Thank you so much.... phew.

Posted by: Sean Clayton at August 15, 2005 6:35 PM

Thanks!!
The last half hour I've been looking for a way to disable this feature, and it was really this simple!! :)

Thanks again!

Nice one! I also found this through Google, it was well worth posting.

another openoffice autocomplete victim here.

thank you.

Posted by: noname at October 1, 2005 2:00 PM

And me. Thanks for posting this and here's hoping the OOo developers will see sense and switch this off by default.

Posted by: David at October 29, 2005 6:52 AM

This doesn't seem to work in OpenOffice 2.0 as I can't find an AutoFormat option in AutoCorrect.

Posted by: at November 3, 2005 6:55 PM

In OpenOffice 2.0 it's practically identical:

Tools > AutoCorrect > Word Completion

I enabled the 'Show as tip' option, personally - far less distracting.

#1 Hit on Google for "Openoffice Autocompletion" lol

Everybody write your google search here if it wasn't already listed by somebody else:

openoffice disable autocomplete

Posted by: Andrew at November 28, 2005 8:13 PM

Heh, me too - openoffice disable autocomplete - who is the lame programmer who decided that should be enabled by default, or even at all useful at any time?

Posted by: at December 6, 2005 5:08 PM

Thank you for this.
Very annoying and well-hidden "feature."

Posted by: Jim O'Connell at December 7, 2005 6:34 PM

Thanks a lot. I hate this annoyance and disabled it too, grrrh....

Posted by: Charles at December 29, 2005 5:01 PM

Thanks for the info. This is one "feature" that should be left off by default. I guess they were drinking heavily at that development meeting.

It's worse in oo2. It collects words. Yes, that's as bad as it sounds.

My search was "disable autocomplete openoffice"

Posted by: Mr. Fakezilla at January 10, 2006 5:46 PM

OK, I have autocomplete turned off in my OO2.0 text documents. Anyone know how to do it in spreadsheets? The "tools - autocorrect - word completion" tab is missing in the spreadsheet dialogue and it's driving me crazy!

Posted by: Emrys at January 14, 2006 4:05 AM

In Calc, it's Tools > Cell Contents > AutoInput.

This feature bugged the hell out of me, thanks for the info.

thanks here too....

Posted by: lila at February 15, 2006 8:04 PM

Oh man, I've been looking for this for months. I'm glad that the first result on Google gave me this. Thanks, man.

Posted by: Dippo at February 16, 2006 11:31 AM

Great stuff (The AutoComplete tip; not the "Fleshlight" ad...!)

Thank you.

Posted by: Ben at February 23, 2006 6:56 AM

WORST. FEATURE. EVER! Glad you were there for me to get rid of this damn thing.

THANKS!

Posted by: Jeff aka Simmy at March 1, 2006 2:25 PM

it's too bad that you can't modify the "word completion" to start after you have typed a set # of characters... for instance, every time i type 'the,' it tries to predict 'theoretically.' how many times in a single document does the word 'the' appear? roughly 40 times on this page alone... just incase you were wondering. however, if i could set it to guess 'theoretically' after typing 'theor,' that would solve my problems... i think.

"Tools -> Cell Contents -> AutoInput"

Thank you so much. I never would have looked there. OOo would be so much better (for me) if they didn't focus so much on adding annoying bells and whistles to imitate MS Office.

Posted by: dtfinch at April 3, 2006 12:36 PM

Now that's some interesting penis enlargement spam. I wonder how they generated that.

Posted by: warlock at May 8, 2006 9:57 PM

I actually like this feature. Originally when I used this feature, I could add a ton of words by copy pasting it in to a field. I think that functionality has been discontinued. hmm...

annoying setting to remove

Openoffice auto complete ---> WORST "FEATURE" EVER!

Thanks for helping me disable it!

Posted by: openoffice auto complete at July 12, 2006 5:42 PM

OOO is the worst piece of software ever. If you are afflicted with this absolute piece of garbage, at least there are helpful pages like this to explain how to lower it's annoyance level from "vile" to merely "evil".

The Dev's of this crap are going to have to explain themselves someday. .

Posted by: none at the moment at July 29, 2006 9:59 PM

Thanks for that. Also got here from google. Autocomplete can be done well but it is shockingly bad in OpenOffice. Thanks for helping me get rid of that nonsense.

Posted by: Garthy at September 11, 2006 10:45 PM

Got here through
"openoffice.org 2.0" disable autocomplete
Terrible, terrible UI design (or lack thereof). Doesn't anyone study HCI anymore? Bleh.

Posted by: wintersweet at September 30, 2006 1:23 AM

I concur with wintersweet; thanks for posting the information though, so that Google could guide me here.

Posted by: Brendan at October 1, 2006 11:00 PM

Surprisingly I like the auto complete. I was searching to make OO auto complete with less characters. Hey, you still helped do it. Thanx

Posted by: makh at November 4, 2006 1:28 AM

This page continues to be incredibly helpful,
and continues to come up first in the rankings
(on Google anyway).
Like the previous poster,
I actually ++like++ this feature, but
(perhaps unlike them) not in Calc.
++Sometimes++ it helps me in Calc,
but more often it gets it wrong,
and gets in the way.
Tnx.

Thank you so much!

Posted by: Tim Kersten at November 12, 2006 5:59 AM

Thanks. I was getting frustrated with OpenOffice for a while there. This option sure is buried deeply for something that most users will want to disable immediately. I wonder why it is even active by default?

Posted by: Gage at November 14, 2006 7:31 PM

Google: openoffice autocomplete.
I saw the "feature" and couldn't figure out how to use it! Type a few letters, some suggestion appears, then what? End? Tab? Right arrow? Ctl-shift-alt-esc-F1-home? Anyhow, now I know the default to accept the "feature" is to push the Enter key. It's a bonus to know how to shut it off.
I shut it off. Thanks.
